Description of Butia paraguayensis
Recently discovered in South America, this Butia seems to come from Butia yatay, but is smaller (2 to 4 metres tall), with small, thin, arching bue-green leaves.
It grows quite slowly, and its thin trunk is mostly recumbent when grown in the north of Brazil, but it can be quite tall in southern parts. It is threatened today by the conversion of its natural habitat into farmable fields.
How to grow Butia paraguayensis
This palm is very wind- and drought-tolerant; plant it in full sun, in a well-drained, sandy soil.
Story time
It grows in sand in its native habitat, and its seeds are used as bait in fishing. The fruit is edible and very tasty.
