Description of Sabal mexicana
A massive 15-metre tall palm, with a dense crownshaft. The large green leaves look darker in the shade, and sometimes look bluish. The bases of old fallen leaves make lattice patterns on the trunk.
How to grow Sabal mexicana
Place it in full sun or in partial shade in a rich wet soil. It can withstand some draught once established, but prefers regular watering. It is also wind- and sea spray-resistant, and thus well adapted to the seaside. It can also do well in a container.
Story time
The trunks are rot-proof, and are used in Texas to make poles, especially in harbours.
