A palm from Brazilian beaches, surprisingly cold-hardy. -10°C (14°F). Buy it online in 20- and 25-litre pots.
Butia of the beach, Butia de Bahia
White-sand beaches in south Brazil (from Porto Alegre in the south to Curibita in the north)
-10°C (14°F), a little less hardy than Butia capitata (now odorata)
It was long mistaken for Butia capitata, but it is more compact, and can thus tolerate more windy conditions. Its trunk is more slender, and will reach 2 to 3 metres when mature. Its feathery palms are bluish, and the seeds and fruit are also smaller.
In a sunny, well-drained position.
